PVN Resident wins at Plano Quilt Show

For Presbyterian Village North (PVN) Assisted Living resident Jane Michell, quilting is a lifelong passion rooted in family tradition.

“I grew up with quilts. My mother made quilts and I love sleeping in quilts,” said Jane.

For the very first time, Jane participated in this year’s Plano Quilt Show, where she won a second-place ribbon and a Merit Hand Quilting award.

With more than 300 quilts in the competition, Jane entered a piece that took her several years to complete. The quilt features a charming collection of “flower bonnet girls,” each stitched with a different flower as a hat. She added delicate tatting embellishments, incorporating another needlework technique she enjoys creating into the design.

The project became a team effort after Jane suffered a stroke that delayed its completion. Her friend Sharon and her sister Patsy, also a PVN resident, stepped in to help. Their collaboration reflects lots of patience and tremendous attention to detail.

A quilt is made from three layers of fabric stitched together to create a finished piece. For Jane, the time and dedication invested into each quilt she makes are part of what makes the craft so special.

“Don’t discard old quilts and don’t mistreat them. A lot of work and time goes into quilting,” she shared.

Jane’s award-winning quilt is a testament to her lifelong love of quilting, a reflection of the support of those around her and a tradition of creativity and skill passed down through generations.
