Antoine Bell is a Project Manager at Presbyterian Village North and has been with the community for about two and a half years. Antoine is not new to working in senior living and was in fact on the ground floor of a start-up community. He was with Highland Springs (an Erickson Living Community), in the mid-Atlantic area, when “it was just a trailer and one residential building. They called us the pioneers at that place,” says Antoine. Prior to this, Antoine worked in other aspects of facilities management and has done so since he was a teenager.
When Antoine got the opportunity to come to PVN, he was thrilled. “This place is lovely,” he says. He is originally from Longview, Texas but grew up in the Fort Worth/Arlington area. His extended family is still in Longview, while his mother and siblings remain in the Arlington area. Antoine lives with his wife, to whom he has been married for seven years.
Antoine’s favorite thing about working at PVN is watching the residents interact with him and each other and share their life stories. He finds it especially interesting to listen to those who worked in the same industry as he does, many of whom were inventors and/or innovators in the field. Hearing them relay tales of how they did things is educational. “It’s great – you learn from it; by listening, you learn,” says Antoine. Finding out that many of the PVN residents were business owners and “captains of industry” is also remarkable. While these folks have accomplished so much in their lives, Antoine notes that “they are usually very humble.”
In late February, when much of Texas was hit with a terrible winter storm, roads were sheets of ice and power was out all over. “It was really different for us!” says Antoine, and he was in the thick of it, along with many other PVN staff. “We were in emergency mode,” he adds. He and other PVN staff spent a few nights on site to assist residents and even set up some temporary areas with comfortable chairs to have a warm place to go for those who lost power. If anyone on campus needed assistance, PVN folks would work together to answer the call. Staff also helped one another out by giving rides to other team members who were unable to get to work. Everyone understood the importance of getting to work during those trying times. “The entire community came together to help,” notes Antoine.
What does Antoine like to do in his spare time? “Before COVID, I liked traveling!” he says. He likes to go places and interact with the locals, to learn their culture and learn about how others live. Antoine especially enjoys going to the Caribbean and is ready to return there (he and his wife got married in St. Maarten). The water, the beach, and the sound of the birds keep him coming back. Europe, and in particular Italy, is another place he would like to visit someday. Antoine also enjoys reading and has a particular interest in ancient history. In addition, he appreciates the simple pleasures of spending time with family, friends, and neighbors.
