Deb Howard and Liz Hansen are the new assistant directors of nursing. They share a job and have an office on the first floor of the main building at PVN. They’re also really busy. “We keep our skates running,” Liz said. When asked how job sharing works out, Liz explained, “I usually care for long -term residents and Deb cares for Medicare patients.”

Asked how she came to nursing, Liz said, “I decided when I was four years old. My grandmother was a nurse’s aide in the 1960s, and she was my big-gest influence.” She added, “I have always been around older people and appreciate older patients. Being able to help them is a blessing.” A graduate of the U. of Rochester, Liz lives in McKinney with her husband, Gary. She enjoys reading and taking walks when she has free time.

Like Liz, Deb knew as a child that she would go into medicine. “I’ve always felt the need to help, and have loved the medical field,” she said. Deb worked as a licensed practical nurse until she was forty, about the time her mother died of colon cancer. “My mother’s death was the reason I started attending nursing school. I was the oldest student in my class. I didn’t want anyone suffering the way my Mom did.” She obtained a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Southern Nazarene U. in Oklahoma City. Although she’s worked in surgery and in emergency room trauma, she also likes geriatric work. “I like working with older people. I get to help,” she said. “I want to add quality to the last chapters of their lives—and hopefully am a better person for it.” Deb has lived in Sachse for six months and has a daughter and grand-son. As a hobby and sideline, Deb is the owner of HowHi Photography.
